Harassment Prevention Policy

The International James Joyce Foundation is committed to an environment in which all members are treated with respect and dignity.  Each member has the right to participate in the Foundation in a professional atmosphere that promotes equal opportunities and prohibits discriminatory practices, including harassment.  Therefore, the Foundation expects that all relationships among members will be free of discrimination and harassment.

I. In order to uphold this commitment, the Foundation maintains a strict policy of prohibiting harassment of any kind, including sexual harassment.  This policy applies to all members of the Foundation.

Sexual harassment includes, but is not limited to, making unwanted sexual advances and requests for sexual favors, including where such conduct has the purpose or effect of interfering with a member’s participation in the Foundation or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.

Examples of prohibited harassment include, but are not limited to:

  • Verbal conduct such as epithets; derogatory jokes or comments; slurs; or unwanted sexual advances, invitations, or comments.
  • Visual conduct such as derogatory email or gestures.
  • Physical conduct such as assault, unwanted touching, blocking normal movement, or interfering with a member’s participation in the Foundation.
  • Retaliation for having reported or threatened to report harassment under this policy.

II. Any member who believes he or she has been harassed by a co-member or agent of the Foundation should promptly report the facts of the incident or incidents and the names of the individual(s) involved to any officer of the Foundation. Alternatively, he or she may report the facts of the incident or incidents to any member of the Board of Trustees, who will in turn convey this information, confidentially, to one or more of the officers.

Upon receipt of a complaint, the Foundation’s officers will undertake a prompt, thorough, objective, and good faith investigation of the harassment allegations.  Such investigation may include interviewing any person(s) accused of violating this policy or any person(s) knowing facts relevant to the incident.  Any person accused of having violated this policy will be given opportunity to privately respond to the allegations.  Complaints initiated pursuant to this policy, and any investigations undertaken in accordance with this policy, will be kept strictly confidential.

If the officers determine that the harassment has occurred, effective remedial action will be taken in accordance with the circumstances involved.  Any member determined by the officers of the Foundation to have violated this policy will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including suspension or removal from the Foundation or the Board of Trustees.  In the event a complaint is made against an officer of the Foundation, the remaining officers shall conduct the investigation and implement the procedures outlined herein without the inclusion of the accused officer.

III.  Retaliation against a member for initiating a complaint and/or assisting in a complaint will be deemed to be a violation of this policy.
